  • 1. Sierra de Espuña

There are three very basic camping areas within the stunning Regional Park of the Sierra de Espuña; apart from four mountain refuges, they are the only accommodation options within the park itself, and must be booked in advance from the park information office. Just outside the park, Camping Sierra Espuña has extensive facilities, including wooden cabañas for rent.

  • 2. Camping Bella Vista, Águilas

A big, friendly site 300 m (984 ft) from the beach, with shop, bar-restaurant, children’s play area and table tennis. Wheelchair-accessible bungalows are also available. Open all year.

  • 3. Camping El Molino, Alicante (Alacant)

Close to glorious San Juan beach, this site has all the usual amenities. There are some trees for shade, but they’re on the thin side in scorching high summer. Open all year.

  • 4. Camping Xàtiva

This attractive site, just outside historic Xàtiva (Játiva), has a fantastic pool, lots of shady pitches and a laundry, but little else. It’s an excellent base for mountain biking, hiking or sightseeing.

  • 5. Caravanning-Camping Villasol, Benidorm

This enormous site, only a few minutes’ walk from the beach, is a virtual village. The facilities include two pools (one heated in winter), bars, a restaurant, satellite TV, supermarket, laundry and play areas. The site also rents out mobile homes.

  • 6. Camping La Marina, La Marina

This huge campsite in a seaside resort south of Santa Pola has every facility, from children’s play areas, gym and large pool to hairdresser and on-site medical staff.

  • 7. La Puerta, Moratalla

This sleepy medieval village offers little visitor accommodation aside from this large campsite, set among trees close to the river. As well as tent and caravan pitches, it rents out cabins. Facilities include bar, restaurant, supermarket and laundry.

  • 8. Calblanque

The Regional Park of Calblanque incorporates one of the region’s wildest stretches of coast. Camping is permitted in one area, and you must book in advance. The site is very basic, but the proximity of the stunning beaches (just across the dunes) more than compensates.

  • 9. Camping Los Delfines, Playa Mojón

This huge site has big pitches on the beach near Puerto de Mazarrón resort. It also rents out wooden bungalows. The site is accessible for disabled travellers.

  • 10. Camping Mariola, nr Bocairent

Set amid mountains and almond groves, this attractive site has shady pitches and cabins for rent. Activities available in the area include hiking, river rafting, and hot-air ballooning.
