Top 10 Seaside Charmers
-
1. Hotel Casa del Gobernador, Isla Tabarca
Escape the hubbub of the resorts and appreciate the tranquil beauty of the Isla Tabarca at this 18th-century former governor’s mansion. It’s been unsympathetically modernized, but retains some charm.
-
2. Hotel Sur, Calabardina
A delightful hotel in a quiet village. Arches and terraces give the place a seductive Arabic feel. There is no restaurant or pool, but uncrowded beaches are just steps away, and there are plenty of local places to eat and drink.
-
3. Hotel Rosa, Denia (Dénia)
Just 20 m (66 ft) from the beach, this modern hotel is perfect for families. Kids will love the big pool (with toddlers’ area). Choose from rooms or self-catering bungalows. There’s a reasonably priced restaurant.
-
4. Hotel Jávea, Xàbia (Jávea)
This classic seaside hotel just steps from the old port in Xàbia has friendly staff and functional but spotless rooms – the nicest have balconies overlooking the port and pebbly beach.
-
5. Hostal Loreto, Denia
This congenial, family-run hotel tucked away in the picturesque old quarter of Denia is housed in a former convent dating back more than four centuries. The staff are charming. The rooms are modest, but perfectly well equipped. The best have balconies overlooking the narrow street below.
-
6. La Racona, Denia
Overlooking the beautiful coves of Las Rotes, and on the fringes of the fabulous Montgó Natural Park, this family-run hotel has rooms and self-catering bungalows, most with views of the sea or the mountains. There’s a small gym, a pool, tennis courts and a restaurant.
-
7. Hotel Gema, Teulada-Moraira
A simple hotel set in gardens, with swimming pool. Relaxed, friendly and ideal for families. There’s a cheerful cafébar and restaurant. The beach is just 300 m (330 yards) away.
-
8. Villas La Manga, La Manga del Mar Menor
This swanky development beside the Mar Menor offers 60 luxurious “mini-suites” in whitewashed villas. There’s a restaurant and a café, plus pools for adults and children. The beaches of the Mar Menor are only 30 m (100 ft) away – those of the Mediterranean, just a little further in the other direction.
-
9. Parador de Jávea, Xàbia
This bland and boxy 1970s four-star parador has a stunning setting right on the beach, and it’s surrounded by lush tropical gardens. The large, light rooms have terraces overlooking the Mediterranean. Facilities include pool, gym and sauna. There’s a fine restaurant.
-
10. Balneario La Encarnación, Los Alcázares
Entering this winsome former spa hotel on the Mar Menor is like stepping back in time. The rooms are simple but charming, the service delightfully old-fashioned and courteous.
