  • 1. Molí del Canyisset, La Font d’En Carròs

Converted from a 17th-century rice mill, this spectacular hotel (with pool) mixes traditional and ultra-modern styles. Some of the rooms are wheelchair-accessible. The restaurant serves good regional dishes.

  • 2. Huerto de la Virgen de las Nieves, Xàtiva (Játiva)

This rosy-pink finca is surrounded by orchards and pine groves. Each of the six rooms and suites is filled with antiques and paintings. The excellent restaurant specializes in Valencian rice dishes. It makes a good base for exploring beautiful Xàtiva, hiking in the sierras, or just relaxing by the pool.

  • 3. Hotel Casa Lehmi, Tàrbena

This beautifully restored finca is set in mountains about 20 km (12 miles) from the coast. There are just eight spacious and very elegant rooms in an adjoining annexe. The excellent facilities include pool, tennis court and sauna.

  • 4. NH Rincón de Pepe, Murcia City

Easily the most stylish city hotel in Murcia, it exudes an air of old-fashioned formality. The celebrated cocktail and tapas bar “La Muralla” is built around the original Arabic wall. Its restaurant (see Rincón de Paco, Caravaca de la Cruz) is one of the best in the region.

  • 5. Casa del Maco, Benissa

This luxurious country hideaway in the foothills of the Lleus Valley has just four rooms, with beamed ceilings. There’s a large terrace and pool. The romantic restaurant serves fine French cuisine.

  • 6. Hostal La Estació, Bocairent

An eccentric former railway station, with one room adapted for disabled guests. Nice touches include aromatherapy kits and fruit baskets in each room. Well located for the nearby Sierra Mariola.

  • 7. Finca El Almendral, Relleu

Each of the rooms in this beguiling hotel is named after one of the deadly sins, and is decorated accordingly. Stroll through almond groves, hike through the mountains, or be sinfully slothful by the pool.

  • 8. La Casa Vieja, Rugat

Beautiful rooms, attentive service and thoughtful details make La Casa Vieja the perfect country retreat. There’s a huge fireplace to huddle round in winter, an excellent restaurant, and a pool.

  • 9. Posada del Mar, Denia (Dénia)

A medieval mansion has been restored to house this stylish hotel, with 16 rooms and nine suites, some with spectacular terraces. Each room is individually decorated with an elegant mixture of old and new.

  • 10. Pensión Oliva, Oliva

On the fringes of maze-like old Oliva, this pretty inn has five simple but stylish rooms. Breakfast is served at a long wooden table on the terrace. Two rooms are suitable for families, one is wheelchair-accessible.
