Cyprus

Cyprus packs a remarkable array of sights and attractions into such a small space: museums and archaeological sites that span more than five millennia of history, throbbing beach resorts, medieval fortresses, age-old temples standing on empty hillsides, cool mountain forests and pretty valleys chequered with vineyards, grain fields and olive groves all complete the landscape. On an island where one can swim and ski all in the same day, this is truly a holiday paradise with something for everyone.

  • This nut-eating rodent favours a diet of carob beans and almonds.

  • Found only in Cyprus, this dark-red tulip (tulipa cypria ) grows wild in the wastes of the Akamas Peninsula.

  • To see and be seen, look no further than Da Capo, where the clientele dress mainly in black and where sunglasses are mandatory day and night. Good coffee and pastries.

  • Intimate dining Italian-style is the keynote here. Delicious antipasti and pasta dishes, and good desserts. Reservations advisable.

  • Dali

A lively farming village that comprises not much more than a main street lined with shops and a scattering of traditional cafés and a village church, Dali offers a taste of Cypriot life largely untainted by tourism. It takes its name from one of Cyprus’s most ancient city states, Idalion, which archaeologists are continuing to explore nearby. Also nearby are the much ruined, but still haunting, remains of a Gothic church and summer palace of the Lusignan kings, who came here to escape the heat of summer on the coasts (see Ancient Idalion).

  • Standing high above Tochni is this traditionally designed complex of eight one-bedroomed cottages, each with a sitting room, verandah or balcony, as well as a shared pool.

  • The Daphne, not far from Pafos harbour and very much in the centre of things, has a loyal following of guests who come back year after year. Affordable, friendly and well-managed, it has clean, bright one- and two-bed apartments and studios which overlook a sunny pool.

  • The nearest stretch of clean sand and water to central Limassol and justifiably popular with local urbanites as well as holidaymakers.

  • Demetra Hotel Apartments, Pafos

This comfortable combination of hotel and self-catering complex in the centre of Pafos is well-kept and prettily decorated. It has a surprisingly grand restaurant on its ground floor, as well as a pleasant pavement café.

  • Wooded grounds surround the air-conditioned suites here. There is an array of bars and restaurants, a huge swimming pool, fitness centre and a choice of watersports.
