Cyprus

Cyprus packs a remarkable array of sights and attractions into such a small space: museums and archaeological sites that span more than five millennia of history, throbbing beach resorts, medieval fortresses, age-old temples standing on empty hillsides, cool mountain forests and pretty valleys chequered with vineyards, grain fields and olive groves all complete the landscape. On an island where one can swim and ski all in the same day, this is truly a holiday paradise with something for everyone.

  • This colossal resort is only 2 km (1.5 miles) from Pafos harbour, but with four restaurants and three bars many residents feel no need to leave its confines. The 250 rooms include 23 split-level lofts, 12 studio suites, and 12 villas. Other facilities include a pool, gym, and a spa specializing in Ayurvedic treatments.

  • Each of the Elysium’s 12 “Royal Villas” has its own landscaped garden and private pool. It is linked to the larger luxury resort of the same name (see Elysium Beach Resort, Pafos).

  • Fine needlework is an age-old Cypriot skill. Embroidered tablecloths, napkins and bed-linen are widely sold.

  • The best-preserved Bronze Age settlement on the island.

  • Formerly Memphis, this redesigned venue houses two clubs: Topaz with progressive, funky house music, and Deep, where the sounds are more mainstream R&B plus Greek hits.

  • Also in the centre of things, Equinox plays a nightly medley of nostalgic classics from the 1960s to the 1980s.

  • The Ermitage has its own sandy beach with a choice of watersports. Accommodation is in self-catering apartments with one or two bedrooms, and there is a children’s pool.

  • A real treat for anyone with an interest in the hidden histories of Cyprus, this gem of a museum houses textiles, ceramics, wood carvings, copper and brass work, and basket-weaving.

  • Ethnographical Museum, Pafos

The best part of this museum, housed in the prosperous mansion of the influential Eliades family, is the bedroom with its fancy lace, carved furniture and embroidered costumes; other rooms display pottery and valuable 19th-century antiques (see Pafos).

  • ETKO’s best-known product was once its Emva sherry-style wine. However, membership of the European Union has forced the winery (along with its rivals) to rebrand some of its products, as EU rules insist sherry may only come from Spain. A tasting follows the tour.
