Cyprus

Cyprus packs a remarkable array of sights and attractions into such a small space: museums and archaeological sites that span more than five millennia of history, throbbing beach resorts, medieval fortresses, age-old temples standing on empty hillsides, cool mountain forests and pretty valleys chequered with vineyards, grain fields and olive groves all complete the landscape. On an island where one can swim and ski all in the same day, this is truly a holiday paradise with something for everyone.

  • Fig Tree Bay, Protaras

This crescent of sand, lapped by turquoise waves, is delightful. There is a full menu of watersports.

  • One of the best of the Pafos winemakers, making red and white wines in a variety of styles.

  • Fikardou (see Fikardou) has won a Europa Nostra award for its unique preservation of Cypriot village life and architecture. Some 40 restored houses display traditional red-tiled roofs, mud brick and stone walls, while two 18th-century homes – the Katsinioros and Achilleas Dimitri houses – function as a rural museum (see Fikardou Rural Museum).

  • Fikardou

The hill village of Fikardou has won tourism awards for its living museum that shows Cyprus village life as it was until just a few decades ago (see Fikardou Rural Museum).

  • Vanished village skills live on in two 16th-century houses that have been restored and furnished with period utensils such as an olive press and hand-looms.

  • This sticky-sweet liqueur, distilled from Cyprus oranges, is best enjoyed with coffee.

  • Fini is famous for its pottery and the highlight of the village is its Pottery Museum, with jars, oil lamps and old kilns.

  • A British expat’s home from home, with a nostalgic 1970s-style menu of prawn cocktail, chicken Kiev and Black Forest Gâteau.

  • Handy for the sights of central Larnaka, Finikoudes, with its palm-lined pedestrian esplanade, is the ideal place for a cooling swim after a morning’s shopping and sightseeing. Very clean for a city beach, it has Blue Flag status and a rank of sunloungers and umbrellas.

  • Fiti

Looking down over slopes and fields to the beaches of the west coast, Fiti is an old-fashioned spot, best known for making lace and woven wallrugs. (see Fiti Village Weaving Museum).
