Cyprus

Cyprus packs a remarkable array of sights and attractions into such a small space: museums and archaeological sites that span more than five millennia of history, throbbing beach resorts, medieval fortresses, age-old temples standing on empty hillsides, cool mountain forests and pretty valleys chequered with vineyards, grain fields and olive groves all complete the landscape. On an island where one can swim and ski all in the same day, this is truly a holiday paradise with something for everyone.

  • Cyprus has perfect golfing weather for much of the year, though some may find July and August uncomfortably hot. Courses on the island, all 18-hole, include the international standard Aphrodite Hills, as well as the Tsada, the Secret Valley and the Elias Country clubs.

  • Christ’s effigy, decorated with flowers, is carried solemnly through the streets at nightfall.

  • Dazzlingly white chalk cliffs provide a sharp contrast to the dark sands of this chain of little bays and coves, each with a choice of snack bars and tavernas .

  • A string of small bays of black sand offset by white cliffs, Governor’s Beach is a favourite with Cypriots getting away from it all, with plenty of snack-bars and tavernas , sunbeds to rent and watersports (see Governor’s Beach).

  • Style-conscious Graffiti attracts few foreign visitors, perhaps because it’s in the town centre not in the tourist area. Relaxed background music, a good choice of drinks, and hookah pipes for those who like their tobacco Middle Eastern-style.

  • With its bunches of tiny blue globes, the grape hyacinth (musacri parviflorum ) is another autumn blossom.

  • Midway between Protaras and Agia Napa, the 5-star Grecian Park is gloriously isolated but at the same time within easy reach of both resorts. The landscaped pool has superb views, and the rooms are very comfortable.

  • After the Carnival festivities, islanders feast on flatulence-inducing beans and pulses with the aim of purging the devil from their bodies.

  • Guru is more stylish than the run of Agia Napa’s pubs and bars – they even have a smart-casual dress code. There are three bars, bar snacks and a generally civilized atmosphere.

  • Driven from the throne of Jerusalem, Guy (d.1194) bought rulership of Cyprus.
