Cyprus

Cyprus packs a remarkable array of sights and attractions into such a small space: museums and archaeological sites that span more than five millennia of history, throbbing beach resorts, medieval fortresses, age-old temples standing on empty hillsides, cool mountain forests and pretty valleys chequered with vineyards, grain fields and olive groves all complete the landscape. On an island where one can swim and ski all in the same day, this is truly a holiday paradise with something for everyone.

  • This self-contained luxury resort has everything you could want: a shopping arcade, four tennis courts, basketball and badminton courts, sports bar, disco, Internet café, even a football pitch. The grounds are car-free – guests get around by bicycle or golf buggy. It also has a thalasso-therapy spa.

  • Lefka has the feel of a desert oasis town, heightened by its mosque standing alone in a grove of palm trees.

  • Lefkara

Famed for the lace-making skills of its womenfolk and the silversmithing skills of its men, Lefkara is home to a multitude of craft shops selling lace, embroidery and jewellery. If you’re not in the mood to buy, marvel instead at the beautifully made treasures in the Museum of Traditional Embroidery and Silversmithing.

  • Lefkara Circular Trail

Lefkara, with its old stone cottages, is seen at its best from above. This uphill short stroll – only 3 km (2 miles) and about 90 minutes there and back – leads from the village’s main street to the hilltop chapel of Metamorfosis tou Sotiros (Transfiguration of the Saviour) and views that sweep over Lefkara and the Agios Minas monastery.

  • Local lace and silverware.

  • Unique to Cyprus, this broad-leafed flower (astragalus macrocarpus lefkarensis ) is found only in the wooded hills around Lefkara.

  • Rooms in this hotel are plain but comfortable, and there is a garden.

  • This 5,500-year-old Neolithic village has been painstakingly reconstructed by archaeologists (see Lempa Neolithic Village).

  • Primitive round-houses have been excavated by archaeologists on the site of a chalkolithic settlement.

  • An award-winning vernacular history museum is housed in a fine old townhouse, with displays of village and ceremonial costumes, prints, tools and household objects and furniture. There are also several finds here from ancient sites.
