Cyprus

Cyprus packs a remarkable array of sights and attractions into such a small space: museums and archaeological sites that span more than five millennia of history, throbbing beach resorts, medieval fortresses, age-old temples standing on empty hillsides, cool mountain forests and pretty valleys chequered with vineyards, grain fields and olive groves all complete the landscape. On an island where one can swim and ski all in the same day, this is truly a holiday paradise with something for everyone.

  • This resort complex is just 20 minutes from the centre of Pafos. There are three pools, including a children’s pool, and the 78 rooms, laid out around well-kept gardens, all have satellite TV and a kitchenette.

  • Louis Ledra Beach, Pafos

This 4-star resort has comfortable rooms and a range of all-inclusive facilities, including adults’ and children’s pools, playground, three bars and a restaurant. A five-minute drive from Pafos, it is on one of the area’s best beaches.

  • Louis Nausicaa Beach, Protaras

The best studios and apartments in southern Cyprus are to be found here, on a landscaped headland overlooking Fig Tree Bay. The low-rise complex of whitewashed buildings features two pools and a private beach. There’s a small supermarket on site, but for those who do not choose to cater for themselves there is also a choice of bars and restaurants.

  • Louis Phaethon Beach, Pafos

The huge, 4-star Louis Phaethon Beach offers all-inclusive rates and facilities that include two restaurants, three bars and three pools (one for kids). Also in the package are all non-motorized watersports, a sauna, Jacuzzi, squash and badminton, as well as meals.

  • The Louis Princess stands on a huge stretch of uncrowded beach, but also has its own pool. Accommodation is in a choice of rooms and suites, as well as studios in two poolside wings. There are two restaurants, three bars, a gym, sauna, and a children’s activity centre. Larnaca’s nightlife is only 10 minutes away.

  • Bite-sized smoked sausages are a must with virtually every meze meal.

  • Only a handful of adventurers and those in the know make it to this sandy stretch of coast, so if you want to escape the crowds, this is one to head for.

  • This bean salad is a hearty, meat-free option for vegetarians, made with cold black-eye beans mixed with plenty of green vegetables – the exact mix depends on the time of year – olive oil and plenty of freshly squeezed lemon juice.

  • The friendly Lover’s Nest Valley has just 30 studios and one-bedroom apartments but a wider range of facilities than any of its local rivals, including a pool, a laundry, a bar (but no restaurant) and air conditioning.

  • Surrounded by landscaped gardens and with its own stretch of beach, the Poseidonia offers a children’s playground and pool, a big choice of restaurants and bars, watersports and its own nightclub.
