Cyprus

Cyprus packs a remarkable array of sights and attractions into such a small space: museums and archaeological sites that span more than five millennia of history, throbbing beach resorts, medieval fortresses, age-old temples standing on empty hillsides, cool mountain forests and pretty valleys chequered with vineyards, grain fields and olive groves all complete the landscape. On an island where one can swim and ski all in the same day, this is truly a holiday paradise with something for everyone.

  • Cut into the limestone rock are 20 chamber tombs, dating from the Neolithic era but also used by the Romans and Byzantines.

  • Makronissos’s sandy hinter-land is perfect for cross-country quad-biking. You can rent bikes at the beach (see Makronissos Beach).

  • The one- and two-bedroom suites at the Malama all have verandahs or patios, fully equipped kitchens and satellite TV. For kids, there’s a playground with a bouncy castle, a children’s pool, tennis, and the Malamino Kids Club offering parties, mini-discos, beach games and excursions.

  • The crumbling minarets of mosques that have remained unused since their Turkish Cypriot faithful fled in 1974 lend this half-deserted village a melancholy ambience.

  • Another little-visited beach, with just one small beach bar and an admirable lack of visitors and noisy watersports to disturb its tranquillity.

  • The hill villages of Pedoulas and Moutoulas are the most convenient gateways to the dramatic Marathassa Valley, covered with cherry orchards.

  • Despite the name, Marco Polo also serves beer and is a comfortable spot to relax while checking your e-mail at one of the Internet tables.

  • The Mare Monte is a medium-sized hotel at Kyrenia’s beachside suburb of Alsancak, with wooded grounds and striking views of the Mediterranean and the dramatic Kyrenia range. It has a small pool.

  • Stuffed sharks.

  • Look out for the reliable and well-priced “Kilani Village” red and white wines from this village winery.
