Cyprus

Cyprus packs a remarkable array of sights and attractions into such a small space: museums and archaeological sites that span more than five millennia of history, throbbing beach resorts, medieval fortresses, age-old temples standing on empty hillsides, cool mountain forests and pretty valleys chequered with vineyards, grain fields and olive groves all complete the landscape. On an island where one can swim and ski all in the same day, this is truly a holiday paradise with something for everyone.

  • White and yellow narcissi, relatives of the daffodil, are brought into bloom by the first autumn showers.

  • Sponge products.

  • Attached to the Louis Nausicaa Hotel at Fig Tree Bay (see Louis Nausicaa Beach, Protaras), these offer the best of both worlds: the privacy and flexibility of a villa, with all the facilities of a luxury hotel on call. Each of the suites is self-contained with a fabulously appointed kitchen and dining room opening onto a private terrace, garden and pool with sea views. Upstairs are two double en-suite bedrooms.

  • Something of a local legend for its combination of traditional recipes with an up-to-date twist. Game features heavily in season, and the seafood is well worth trying too.

  • This restaurant stands beside a clear stream that flows over the waterfall above and specializes in fresh river trout.

  • Neromilos, Pera Pedi

A delightful village tavern, beside a chuckling stream that formerly drove the watermill. All the Cypriot favourites, prepared on the charcoal grill or in a traditional clay oven.

  • A local favourite, Niazi’s (opposite the Dome Hotel) is highly regarded for its grills, kebabs and sticky desserts, and has a better than average wine list.

  • The Byzantine emperor (963–9) drove the Saracen corsairs from Cyprus.

  • Open-air performances and events in historic venues are the keynote of Northern Nicosia’s annual festival of theatre and dance.

  • Nicosia Walled City

Cyprus’s capital city is a mélange of medieval, colonial and modern influences. Within the brooding ramparts built by the Venetians are the narrow pedestrian streets and prettily restored buildings of the Laiki Geitonia pedestrianized district, full of souvenir shops and cafés. But the city also offers more than a day’s worth of museums and heritage sites celebrating every aspect of the Nicosia’s history, from its ancient past to its traditional crafts (see Nicosia Walled City).
