Cyprus

Cyprus packs a remarkable array of sights and attractions into such a small space: museums and archaeological sites that span more than five millennia of history, throbbing beach resorts, medieval fortresses, age-old temples standing on empty hillsides, cool mountain forests and pretty valleys chequered with vineyards, grain fields and olive groves all complete the landscape. On an island where one can swim and ski all in the same day, this is truly a holiday paradise with something for everyone.

  • Nicosia Walled City

The divided city, within medieval ramparts, is full of interest. With a clutch of museums, historic buildings, a lively morning market and authentic cafés and restaurants, it merits a leisurely visit (see Nicosia Walled City).

  • Nissi Beach, Agia Napa

Sleep off the effects of a night’s clubbing in the sun at Agia Napa’s most favoured beach or, if you still have the energy, go waterskiing, windsurfing, parascending or jet skiing. Bungee jumping is another popular activity here.

  • Bellapais is once again the stunning venue for this annual event, with performances by world-famous artistes.

  • Crumbling old houses and a cheerful clutter of bazaars surround the medieval monuments of the Turkish half of the divided city. The Selimiye Mosque – a picturesque hybrid of medieval Christian and Islamic architecture – is the city’s most prominent landmark.

  • O Pefkos, Fini

Get here in time to watch the mountain sunset. All the favourite Cypriot grills and casseroles can be enjoyed here.

  • It may be difficult to tear the kids away from this cool cavern full of tanks housing scary piranhas and sharks, menacing morays, stingrays and hundreds of other fascinating denizens of the underwater world. It may be even more difficult to persuade them to go back in the water after they have seen what may lurk beneath. In the aquarium gardens there are also crocodile and turtle ponds and a penguin house.

  • A seafood favourite, chunks of octopus are marinated then simmered in red wine and spiced with cumin and coriander.

  • This hearty dish is lamb baked in the oven in its own juices until it is so tender that it falls off the bone. Often served with chunky potato chips, it is a good choice for cooler weather.

  • Pamper your sweet tooth at this Austrian-style café, with the best and creamiest cakes and pastries in town. A tempting menu of meaty Viennese main meals is on offer too.

  • Three pools and a range of facilities including mini-golf, floodlit tennis courts, pool tables and a children’s play area make this one of the best choices in Agia Napa.
