Cyprus

Cyprus packs a remarkable array of sights and attractions into such a small space: museums and archaeological sites that span more than five millennia of history, throbbing beach resorts, medieval fortresses, age-old temples standing on empty hillsides, cool mountain forests and pretty valleys chequered with vineyards, grain fields and olive groves all complete the landscape. On an island where one can swim and ski all in the same day, this is truly a holiday paradise with something for everyone.

  • The peninsula’s salt lake is a refuge in winter for bright pink flamingoes and other migrant birds.

  • The largest and most up-market “tourist village” style accommodation in the Agia Napa region has indoor and outdoor pools, watersports, a gym, and is right on the beach.

  • Endangered loggerhead and green turtles lay their eggs on this undeveloped crescent of sand and shingle. The Society for Protection of Turtles (SPOT) operates a small information centre and takes visitors on turtle-watching walks from May to October, during the nesting season, as well as doing its best to protect eggs and hatchlings.

  • This green oasis, with an aviary and flock of peacocks, makes a pleasant change from busy Limassol.

  • Cyprus welcomed Alexander as a liberator from Persian dominance in 325 BC.

  • Choose from standard rooms or luxury suites at this superb resort overlooking Pafos harbour. Activities range from tennis, volleyball and watersports, and eating places include a gourmet restaurant.

  • Aliada, Limassol

The attractive garden, behind this elegant Limassol mansion, is a delightful place to dine on a summer evening, and there are also four dining rooms inside, much favoured by locals in the know. The food is some of the best in the region, especially the charcoal-grilled dishes.

  • The focal point of this hillside spot is a giant juniper tree, said to be the oldest tree on the island.

  • Founded around 1000 BC, Amathous flourished under the Romans and Byzantines (see Ancient Amathous).

  • Taverna -eating at its best, in an old village house with a terrace draped with vines. A good choice of charcoal-grilled dishes, meze and local wines.
