Cyprus

Cyprus packs a remarkable array of sights and attractions into such a small space: museums and archaeological sites that span more than five millennia of history, throbbing beach resorts, medieval fortresses, age-old temples standing on empty hillsides, cool mountain forests and pretty valleys chequered with vineyards, grain fields and olive groves all complete the landscape. On an island where one can swim and ski all in the same day, this is truly a holiday paradise with something for everyone.

  • This Internet café on the waterfront also serves drinks.

  • Kids with a taste for scaly critters and creepy-crawlies will love this collection of snakes, lizards, tortoises (sometimes including newly-hatched babies), scorpions and hairy spiders. Nervous mums and dads may be less enthusiastic.

  • When the ship carrying Richard’s fiancée was driven by storms to Limassol, the English king (1157–99) seized Cyprus (see Historic Limassol).

  • The last place to close in Agia Napa, the River Reggae Club stays open until 7am. Take a pre-dawn swim in the pool before watching the sun rise.

  • Accommodation here is in one-, two- or three-bedroom cottages or villas with self-catering facilities, but there are also several restaurants and bars if you don’t want to cook for yourself. Facilities include swimming pools, tennis court, volleyball and horse-riding.

  • The Roadhouse does its best to recreate an English pub, with roast dinners on Sundays, a garden bar and live music most week nights.

  • This British-owned music pub is another nostalgia trip for the pretechno set, with a parade of 1960s and 1970s hits. There’s also a pop quiz every night in summer.

  • These insect-eating birds, with turquoise, green and yellow plumage, are most often seen in spring.

  • Roman Restaurant, Pafos

Colourfully kitsch, the Roman Hotel’s poolside restaurant is decorated in an imitation of a Hellenistic villa, complete with arches, columns and painted friezes. The pool is open to visitors as well as residents.

  • A large, empty beach on the northern shore of the Karpas Peninsula, overlooked by pine woods. It is another nesting place for endangered green turtles.
