Cyprus packs a remarkable array of sights and attractions into such a small space: museums and archaeological sites that span more than five millennia of history, throbbing beach resorts, medieval fortresses, age-old temples standing on empty hillsides, cool mountain forests and pretty valleys chequered with vineyards, grain fields and olive groves all complete the landscape. Colourfully kitsch, the Roman Hotel’s poolside restaurant is decorated in an imitation of a Hellenistic villa, complete with arches, columns and painted friezes. The pool is open to visitors as well as residents.

A large, empty beach on the northern shore of the Karpas Peninsula, overlooked by pine woods. It is another nesting place for endangered green turtles.
