Cyprus

Cyprus packs a remarkable array of sights and attractions into such a small space: museums and archaeological sites that span more than five millennia of history, throbbing beach resorts, medieval fortresses, age-old temples standing on empty hillsides, cool mountain forests and pretty valleys chequered with vineyards, grain fields and olive groves all complete the landscape. On an island where one can swim and ski all in the same day, this is truly a holiday paradise with something for everyone.

  • Sharing the bay with Asprokremos, Takkas is also overlooked by pine-covered slopes and is the perfect spot for a cooling plunge.

  • This site was known for its copper mines (see Tamassos).

  • Tamassos was one of the earliest cities on the island (6th century BC) and grew wealthy from its copper mines, which were famed throughout the ancient world.

  • Try your hand at back-gammon, Cyprus’s favourite board game, in this cheery café, while enjoying what the owner claims is the best cappuccino in Larnaka.

  • The tumbling of skittles can be heard at state-of-the-art air-conditioned bowling centres in Agia Napa (where there is a combined bowling alley and Internet café on the waterfront), Pafos, Larnaka and Limassol. Most are open from noon until 2am.

  • Tennis fans will find all-weather, floodlit public courts all over Cyprus, and most 5-star hotels and apartment complexes also have floodlit courts.

  • The newest, purpose-built museum on the island features sea-related artefacts dating from prehistoric times to the late 19th century. A replica of the Kyrenia Ship, the original of which is in Kyrenia Castle, has pride of place.

  • The 20-km (12.5-mile) journey from Agios Georgios to Latsi is rewarding for tougher riders.

  • The Annabelle, Pafos

Long regarded as Pafos’s best hotel, it exudes quiet style, yet with all the fun and facilities of the town on your doorstep.

  • The English owner searches out antique furniture and other collectables from all over Cyprus.
