Cyprus

Cyprus packs a remarkable array of sights and attractions into such a small space: museums and archaeological sites that span more than five millennia of history, throbbing beach resorts, medieval fortresses, age-old temples standing on empty hillsides, cool mountain forests and pretty valleys chequered with vineyards, grain fields and olive groves all complete the landscape. On an island where one can swim and ski all in the same day, this is truly a holiday paradise with something for everyone.

  • A painted Pantokrator (Christ) gazes down from the dome of this 12th-century church.

  • Look out for old kettles and coffee pots, jugs and antique hubble-bubble pipes in Nicosia.

  • Aphrodite Waterpark

This visitor attraction has dozens of different thrills, spills, chutes and pools (see Aphrodite Waterpark, Pafos).

  • Fun for all the family is the theme of this enormous water park, which boasts more than 30 rides and attractions, ranging from fairly gentle slides and floats to exciting five-lane “mat racing”, a simulated wave pool, and a shallow pool for toddlers. A very welcome break from the often oppressive summer heat (see Aphrodite Waterpark).

  • Aphrodites Rock, paphos

One of the most stunning parts of the Cypriot coastline, also the birth place of Aphrodite. Legend has it that this is where the Goddess of Love emerged from the sea, and everywhere she stepped between here and Paphos itself, sprang life, and that's why Paphos district is so fertile. It lies just east of Paphos.

  • Sit outdoors and watch the world of Agia Napa’s harbour go by at this stylish café in the pedestrianized area by the port. Open day and night, Aragma serves coffee, bottled beers, soft drinks and cocktails, as well as a choice of sandwiches and snacks.

  • In the heart of the wine-making country between Pafos and the north coast, Araouzos is a gem of a restaurant that amply repays the minor trouble of getting here. The menu consists of stews, game dishes and roasts.

  • Makarios (1913–77) led the independence campaign and was Cyprus’s first president.

  • Starting by the harbour, take in Pafos’s main sights in a 5-km (3-mile) ride.

  • The largest of the wine-making villages is a mellow community of sturdy old stone buildings.
