Cyprus

Cyprus packs a remarkable array of sights and attractions into such a small space: museums and archaeological sites that span more than five millennia of history, throbbing beach resorts, medieval fortresses, age-old temples standing on empty hillsides, cool mountain forests and pretty valleys chequered with vineyards, grain fields and olive groves all complete the landscape. On an island where one can swim and ski all in the same day, this is truly a holiday paradise with something for everyone.

  • Bustling Barolo is a favourite for lunch. There’s a strong Italian twist to the menu.

  • Hidden away in a tiny valley is the goddess’s mythical bathing pool. Around the spring is a network of walking trails.

  • Brewed in Cyprus are KEO, Carlsberg and Five Beer, plus Leon – first produced in 1937 and recently reintroduced. Most foreign beers are also available everywhere.

  • Perched above the sea, Bellapais would be worth the journey into the mountains just for the view. But the abbey, built by the Augustinian order in 1200, is also the most spectacular piece of Gothic architecture in Cyprus, with vaulted stonework decorated with elaborate carving.

  • Close to the spectacular ruin of Bellapais Abbey (see Bellapais Abbey), this atmospheric small hotel really rates higher than its 3-star classification. It has pretty gardens shaded by cypresses and palm trees, a good pool, and a well-deserved reputation for excellent Turkish Cypriot cooking. High above sea level, it also offers a cool refuge from the north coast’s blazing heat.

  • You will hear the latest Greek and international hits here, a popular haunt with local twenty-somethings and visitors alike. Famed for its café frappé.

  • Overlooking the sandy beach north of Famagusta, this medium-size hotel is comfortable and well-appointed despite its rather undistinguished 1970s-style architecture. Facilities include tennis courts, a gym, Turkish bath, pool, restaurant and terrace bar, as well as a casino and nightclub.

  • Black and White, Agia Napa

Favouring classic soul and R&B, this small, crowded club is another Agia Napa institution.

  • The only restaurant in the still being restored Arabahmet district serves lavish meze in an old courtyard, a private dining room, or an Ottoman-style banquet room upstairs.

  • A choice of two villas, each sleeping six people and each with a pool, between unpretentious Polis and hideaway Neo Chorio. The beaches of Chrysochou Bay, the harbour tavernas of Lakki and the forested wilderness of the Akamas peninsula are not far away.
