  • Wooded grounds surround the air-conditioned suites here. There is an array of bars and restaurants, a huge swimming pool, fitness centre and a choice of watersports.

  • Dome Hotel, Kyrenia

During the British colonial era the Dome was the poshest hotel in Kyrenia and the summer and weekend haunt of wealthy British expats. Although it has now been eclipsed by lavish new competitors, it has a nostalgic style and, with its location close to Kyrenia’s pretty harbour, is a handy base for exploring the region.

  • This colossal resort is only 2 km (1.5 miles) from Pafos harbour, but with four restaurants and three bars many residents feel no need to leave its confines. The 250 rooms include 23 split-level lofts, 12 studio suites, and 12 villas. Other facilities include a pool, gym, and a spa specializing in Ayurvedic treatments.

  • Each of the Elysium’s 12 “Royal Villas” has its own landscaped garden and private pool. It is linked to the larger luxury resort of the same name (see Elysium Beach Resort, Pafos).

  • The Ermitage has its own sandy beach with a choice of watersports. Accommodation is in self-catering apartments with one or two bedrooms, and there is a children’s pool.

  • A miniature waterfall flows into the Golden Bay’s turquoise pool, surrounded by manicured lawns and palm trees. The only 5-star hotel in Larnaca is right on the beach, with watersports galore, lavish rooms and fine dining.

  • Midway between Protaras and Agia Napa, the 5-star Grecian Park is gloriously isolated but at the same time within easy reach of both resorts. The landscaped pool has superb views, and the rooms are very comfortable.

  • The Holiday Inn is the best hotel within the ramparts of old Nicosia. The rooms are comfortable, and there’s an indoor pool, three restaurants and a rooftop bar.

  • Hotel Riu Cypria Maris, Geroskipou

This comfortable 4-star hotel stands on its own semi-private beach, with a huge pool (and a smaller toddlers’ pool) and offers good value for money, with plenty of watersports and entertainment.

  • All the rooms in this comfortable 3-star hotel have sea views and balconies, and there is a choice of accommodation in the main wing or in self-catering bungalows around the pool.
