  • This farming village looks over to the Turkish-occupied North, towards Famagusta, and you can make out the battlements of the walled city in the distance. Deryneia also has three pretty churches: 15th-century Agia Marina, 17th-century Agios Georgios and the church of the Panagia (see Famagusta Gulf Viewpoint).

  • Archaeological finds near this village suggest that people have lived here for 10,000 years, making it one of the oldest settlements in Europe.

  • Hala Sultan Tekke

Hala Sultan Tekke is prettiest in winter and spring when its domes and spires are reflected in the waters of Larnaka’s Salt Lake. Within the mosque is the tomb of Umm Haram, aunt of the prophet Mohammed, rendering it a Muslim pilgrimage site.

  • This village nestles beside a stream in a huddle of old stone houses. Nearby, in the Neolithic village of Tenta, Stone Age skeletons have been found.

  • Kition

Foundations of Mycenaean temples dating from the 13th century BC hint at a lost city beneath Larnaka’s streets. There are remnants of ancient temples, sacrificial altars and a coppersmith’s workshop.

  • Woven baskets dangling outside shops are an indication that the craft for which this village is famous still thrives.

  • Cut into the limestone rock are 20 chamber tombs, dating from the Neolithic era but also used by the Romans and Byzantines.

  • This tiny fishing port has wooden boats moored along the banks, and a crumbling Venetian watchtower nearby.

  • Sotira is home to five Byzantine churches, the most important of which is Metamorphosis tou Sotiros, from which the village takes its name.

  • Surrounded by vineyards and farmland, Tochni has a traditional feel, with old stone houses lining narrow streets.
