Foundations of Mycenaean temples dating from the 13th century BC hint at a lost city beneath Larnaka’s streets. There are remnants of ancient temples, sacrificial altars and a coppersmith’s workshop.

Hala Sultan Tekke is prettiest in winter and spring when its domes and spires are reflected in the waters of Larnaka’s Salt Lake. Within the mosque is the tomb of Umm Haram, aunt of the prophet Mohammed, rendering it a Muslim pilgrimage site.

Sotira is home to five Byzantine churches, the most important of which is Metamorphosis tou Sotiros, from which the village takes its name.

Woven baskets dangling outside shops are an indication that the craft for which this village is famous still thrives.

Archaeological finds near this village suggest that people have lived here for 10,000 years, making it one of the oldest settlements in Europe.

This tiny fishing port has wooden boats moored along the banks, and a crumbling Venetian watchtower nearby.
