  • A natural amphitheatre of white limestone cliffs conceals this rugged stretch of shoreline from the south coast highway. The pebbles make it better suited for a quick dip before lunch than a full day’s sunbathing.

  • Some say this is the best beach in Cyprus, and it is certainly one of the least crowded, despite its majestic sweep of sand from which you can gaze out over the sparkling, calm waters or watch splendid sunsets over Cape Amaoutis and its offshore islets.

  • A beautiful strip of clean pebbles and coarse sand, with clear water and great coastal views. In a forest of eucalyptus trees immediately behind the beach there’s a pleasant camp site and a beach bar and restaurant.

  • This sandy crescent draws the crowds, especially on summer weekends when it is a magnet for young Cypriots. Turn up early to be sure of finding an empty sun-lounger or a patch of unoccupied sand.

  • The nearest stretch of clean sand and water to central Limassol and justifiably popular with local urbanites as well as holidaymakers.

  • One of the least crowded and least visited beaches on the south coast. With around 2 km (1.5 miles) of sand and pebbles, it is great for beachcombers looking for solitude. A bar-restaurant midway along serves meals and cold drinks.

  • The 6-km (4-mile) walk from the Baths of Aphrodite (see Baths of Aphrodite) winds along rocky slopes to end near a small spring, below which this bay of sand and pebbles is a very welcome sight.

  • This long beach on the outskirts of Pafos is little used by holidaymakers but is a favourite with locals. It is clean and well tended, and the self-service snack bar has showers, toilets and changing rooms.

  • Dazzlingly white chalk cliffs provide a sharp contrast to the dark sands of this chain of little bays and coves, each with a choice of snack bars and tavernas .

  • Kato Pyrgos

Close to the “Green Line” and the Turkish enclave at Kokkina, Kato Pyrgos is an adequate expanse of sand and pebbles. The hills of Tillyria form a dramatic backdrop and there are a number of places to stay and eat in the nearby village.
