1. Alassa Park
This green oasis, with an aviary and flock of peacocks, makes a pleasant change from busy Limassol.

The peninsula’s salt lake is a refuge in winter for bright pink flamingoes and other migrant birds.

3. Vouni Donkey Sanctuary
Vouni is a half-deserted spot whose old-fashioned houses have earned it conservation-area status. The sanctuary at Stena, just outside the village, gives a retirement home to more than 100 donkeys.

4. Chryssorogiatissa Monastery
This monastery produces some of the island’s best wines. Within is a museum of religious paraphernalia.

5. Panagia tou Sinti
The former monastery was left to crumble after the Venetians were driven from Cyprus by the Ottomans, but it underwent restoration in 1997.

This visitor attraction has dozens of different thrills, spills, chutes and pools (see Aphrodite Waterpark, Pafos).

7. Maa
Maa is believed to be the first Greek-Mycenaean settlement in Cyprus. At the small museum weapons, amulets and jewellery are on display.

8. Lempa Neolithic Village
Primitive round-houses have been excavated by archaeologists on the site of a chalkolithic settlement.

9. Baths of Aphrodite
Hidden away in a tiny valley is the goddess’s mythical bathing pool. Around the spring is a network of walking trails.

A combination of farming village and low-key resort, Polis has an uncrowded beach and a small seaport, Latsi, with fish tavernas.
