  • 1. Kinyras, Pafos

Just off Ktima Pafos’s central square, Kinyras is a characterful old town-house that has been turned into a stylish guesthouse. Paintings and sculptures by young artists from the Cyprus College of Art at nearby Lempa adorn the foyer, corridors and rooms. There’s a courtyard café and a restaurant with a menu of the best traditional Cypriot cooking.

  • 2. Kostaris, Pafos

These stone-built houses and adjoining cottage share a pretty garden in which there is a traditional clay oven, an old wine-press and – best of all – a small pool. All three houses are furnished with charm, and share fabulous views.

  • 3. The Spanos House, Pafos

This lovely family home stands in the middle of an orange grove and has been renovated to provide all you could wish for – including a swimming pool among the trees, which is shared between the one-bedroom house and two self-contained studio apartments.

  • 4. To Spiti tis Rigenas, Larnaca

Built in the mid-19th century by the prominent Rigenas family, this mellow family home has a stone-paved courtyard full of flowers, three double bedrooms, a pool, and is 9 km (5.5 miles) from the nearest beach.

  • 5. Kontoyannis House, Kalavassos

This old village home in the centre of Kalavassos has been tastefully converted into four studios and apartments, which share a pretty courtyard. Nearby are the sandy coves of Governor’s Beach (see Governor’s Beach).

  • 6. Stratos House, Kalavassos

Stratos is only steps away from the village square, with a beautiful arcaded courtyard off which open two large studio rooms, each with their own en-suite bathroom and kitchenette. On the upper floor is a lovely vine-covered verandah. Sensitively renovated, the house still retains much of its original 19th-century character.

  • 7. Angela’s Stone House, Tochni

In the centre of Tochni is this 19th-century stone house which has been lovingly restored. Two bedrooms, a balcony, and a courtyard filled with lemon trees and pomegranates.

  • 8. Socrates House, Tochni

Modern comforts such as air conditioning and in-room TV, all within a beautiful traditional building. An old olive mill stands in the courtyard, and the guesthouse’s taverna serves traditional meals.

  • 9. Danae House, Tochni

Standing high above Tochni is this traditionally designed complex of eight one-bedroomed cottages, each with a sitting room, verandah or balcony, as well as a shared pool.

  • 10. Vasilopoulos House, Tochni

One of the oldest houses in Tochni now contains three one-bedroom apartments and five studios, each with a kitchen and all opening onto a shady courtyard.
