Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is a country of surprising contrasts and extraordinary variety. From the chilly peak of the Caribbean’s highest mountain to some of the region’s most delightful beaches, the country boasts lush valleys, spectacular waterfalls, and sun-baked deserts. The past and present also blend in a fascinating mix of colonial buildings and modern hotels, sleepy rural villages and lively tourist resorts. The people, too, reflect a kaleidoscope of influences — Spanish, African, indigenous — creating a culture that emphasizes both creativity and fun in the fields of music, sport, and art.

  • This hotel lies in the pleasant residential area of Gazcue, just west of the Colonial Zone. It offers budget rooms, each with a fridge and TV. There is also a bar and a restaurant.

  • One of the leading night spots in Sosúa, drawing crowds from all over the North Coast, especially unattached males. DJ Pablo Vivax plays a mix of Latin and international music. At weekends, it’s mainly Dominican music (see D’Classico, Sosúa).

  • D’Classico, Sosúa

A large, fun disco where they play a mixture of merengue, bachata, Latin music, rock, and pop. At weekends it’s mainly Dominican music, which attracts local youth keen to befriend foreigners and teach them how to dance.

  • A small disco and bar that charges an entry fee if there’s a special event or a visiting DJ is playing.

  • Taller and whiter than the cattle egret, the snowy egret is another mangrove-loving bird. It nests in colonies in the protective thickets and stalks its prey in the shallow waters (see Cattle Egret).

  • As remote a place as you’re likely to find, up a tortuous mountain road from Pedernales. The tiny border post of El Aguacate (Avocado) is almost lost among pine forests and clouds.

  • A guesthouse in a renovated home featuring a roof terrace and a patio. Airport transfers can be arranged. Breakfast included in the rates.

  • A charming restaurant set in a colonial courtyard. Its elegant bar and extensive menu of seafood, salads, and pasta make it very popular.

  • With smart decor and beautifully laid tables, the café is popular with the upper crust of Santiago society. The chef serves up excellent international dishes such as rack of lamb, steaks, and fish.

  • Popular with tour groups and locals, El Conuco offers a good value buffet lunch and dinner. There are traditional dance performances during busy periods (see El Conuco, Santo Domingo)
