Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is a country of surprising contrasts and extraordinary variety. From the chilly peak of the Caribbean’s highest mountain to some of the region’s most delightful beaches, the country boasts lush valleys, spectacular waterfalls, and sun-baked deserts. The past and present also blend in a fascinating mix of colonial buildings and modern hotels, sleepy rural villages and lively tourist resorts. The people, too, reflect a kaleidoscope of influences — Spanish, African, indigenous — creating a culture that emphasizes both creativity and fun in the fields of music, sport, and art.

  • Formerly of the Hermanos Rosario, Toño, a.k.a. El Cuco, is a modern-day merengue superstar.

  • A four-time Golden Glover, he was an adept catcher and then a highly rated manager.

  • Torre del Homenaje, Santo Domingo

After a challenging climb up a spiral staircase, look out to the mouth of the Ozama River and across the water at the looming Columbus Lighthouse. Best of all is the panoramic view of the Zona Colonial, a grid of low-level whitewashed buildings nestling amid lush tropical trees.

  • Fried plantains again, but of the unripe type and more savoury, fried once, flattened, and refried.

  • Tree Frog

Popular among the locals as a coqui , the tiny greenish-brown frog is one of several similar species known for their surprisingly loud choruses during the hours of darkness. One of the most evocative of Caribbean sounds, the tireless nocturnal singing of tree frogs becomes louder after a heavy downpour.

  • The hotel bar is decorated in tropical style, and there’s a variety of music including live shows. Tapas is a perfect choice with your cocktails. Golf and petanque are also available.

  • Tropical Lodge

This seaside hotel run by Philippe and Brigitte has a good restaurant and the best pizzas in Samaná.

  • The nastiest dictator of them all ordered the massacre of 15,000 Haitians in 1937.

  • The low-budget version of rafting uses a large rubber ring. Swimmers are swept down the river, protected to some degree by the inflated tube.

  • No great beauty with its bare red face, it is nevertheless a useful carrion eater.
