  • The Río Yaque del Norte and the Jimenoa (see Salto de Jimenoa) are good kayaking rivers, with a mix of white water, sharp turns, and precipitous drops.

  • Also centered around the surging surf beaches of the Cabarete area, this relatively new sport is growing in popularity because the use of a huge kite to produce momentum requires less wind than does a windsurfer’s sail. With a following breeze, good kitesurfers can make huge leaps. Kitexcite specializes in this sport.

  • Another firm favorite with surfers, a white-sand beach set among saltpans and rolling dunes.

  • Many activities are available, including swimming and snorkeling.

  • Trujillo’s monument is not to everyone’s taste, but a climb to the top of the tower results in a wonderful view over the surprisingly large city and the surrounding countryside. The lift, alas, is out of use, but the exertion is well worth the effort (see Monumento a los Héroes de la Restauración, Monumento a los Héroes de la Restauración).

  • The serpentine road linking the beach resort of Las Terrenas (see Las Terrenas) to the town of Sánchez works its way over the spine of the peninsula, reaching 1,312 ft (400 m) near Naranjita village. From the roadside you can take in enormous vistas of coconut trees, offshore islands, and the coastline ahead.

  • Baoruco boasts the greatest variety of landscapes and flora, ranging from dust-dry, low-level hillsides to exuberantly tropical rainforests. A four-wheel-drive is essential to get to the profusion of wild orchids and swathes of pine forest.

  • Parque Nacional del Este

This large area of wilderness contains dry tropical forest and the Robinson Crusoe Island of Saona. An official guide must be hired, and a boat trip from Bayahibe is the best way to reach the otherwise inaccessible nature trails.

  • Parque Nacional Monte Cristi

Most of this sprawling wilderness comprises desert and hard-to-reach mangrove swamps. But the large humpback mountain of El Morro is easily accessible from the park office, offering a great walk through a cutting onto the beach. This is the place to appreciate the Northwest’s ecosystem.

  • Widely considered to be simply the best pitcher in the US Major League.
