  • Carty was so impressive as a youngster that ten clubs tried to sign him up.

  • Sail Boats

Boats and catamarans are available at the main tourist resorts in the country. A good option is the small Hobie One cat (boats), to be found as part of all-inclusive packages at places such as Bávaro, Boca Chica, Puerto Plata, Punta Cana, and Bayahibe.

  • A household name, who rose from shoe shining to become a millionaire star and philanthropist.

  • San Felipe Fortress, Puerto Plata

Standing on the battlements of this ancient bastion situated on a promontory, behold the Atlantic, over the calm Puerto Plata Bay, or the majestic Pico Isabel de Torres. Late afternoons are spectacular, as the mountain changes color with the setting sun.

  • San Rafael

Inland from the deservedly popular beach and swimming hole, the river that fills the pool flows and falls down a hillside covered with boulders, ferns, and tropical trees. A hike up the riverside path passes a series of small waterfalls and leads to magnificent sea views.

  • Santo Cerro

The site of a Spanish victory over the Tainos and a holy pilgrimage place, this mountain-top church is surrounded by a belvedere from where views extend for miles over the fertile Cibao Valley. The forested mountains and green valley floor might look European were it not for the palm trees.

  • Most dive companies are owned by Europeans or North Americans, who offer training as well as rental equipment. Diving around the country is incredibly varied, yielding up 16th-century shipwrecks, coral reefs, and marine life. Try the Tropical Dive Centre, Tropic Banana Hotel at Las Terrenas or Viva Diving, Bayahibe.

  • Snorkeling

A snorkel and mask allows you to enter a multicolored underwater world of rocks, reefs, and teeming fish. The beaches around Las Terrenas are recommended as a good base for snorkeling.

  • A protected crescent cove in the town’s center with an easily accessible reef that attracts snorkelers.

  • There are good swimming options all around the country, but as a general rule the beaches on the South Caribbean coast have calmer waters than those on the Atlantic north. While some resort beaches have lifeguards, most public ones do not, and it is worth being cautious of strong currents.
