1. Atarazana 9, Santo Domingo
Time your sightseeing in the old city so that you can have an evening drink here. It’s one of the many historic buildings around the Alcázar de Colón that have been converted into a bar or restaurant. The bar serves good drinks.

2. Beer House, Santo Domingo
The locally brewed Presidente is a great beer for a hot day, but here you can also choose from up to 40 beers from around the world. The atmosphere is casual and friendly, and often there’s live music, including jazz.

3. Café Cito, Puerto Plata
Just outside the complex of all-inclusive hotels, this bar is popular with ex-pats, and tourists from nearby resorts. There’s a pool table, sports TV screen, live jazz music, and karaoke on weekends.

4. Jungle Bar, Puerto Plata
This English-run bar is a favorite with the British crowd. You can get a chip butty (sandwich) or a fried breakfast, and all the usual drinks. There are often event nights, when the bar stays open till late.

Primarily a restaurant, this bar on the cliff-top overlooking the sea is a great place for a sunset cocktail.

6. Syroz, Las Terrenas
This famous bar, on the beach by the Pueblo de los Pescadores, has a dance floor where most of the action takes place. Live music on the weekends.

7. José Oshay’s Irish Beach Pub, Cabarete
Walk through José Oshay’s shopping village, off the main road, to reach this beachfront bar. Food is available, but it’s basically a drinking spot, packed at night with windsurfers burning candles at both ends after a busy day on the waves.

8. Pop Lounge, Santo Domingo
The ambience here is of a European club, but, although there’s music, there’s no dance floor. The club has several rooms, and bars that are decorated in different colors – a rainbow theme that is continued in the cocktails and ice.

9. Alta Copa, Santo Domingo
Formerly a wine shop, the Alta Copa has been transformed into a wine bar decorated as a Spanish cava. Cocktails as well as wine are served at this sought-after meeting place for the Dominicans.

10. Hemingway’s Café, Puerto Plaza
The bar is decorated along the theme of Ernest Hemingway, with nautical and sportfishing paraphernalia around the walls. On weekends there’s live music and some karaoke, otherwise a DJ plays rock, Latin electronic, and house music. It’s popular with visitors, and tourists from the resorts who want a change of scenery.
