  • 1. Aída, Santo Domingo

    A friendly, family-run hotel, set above a music store in the heart of the shopping area of the old city. The rooms are basic but clean and adequate. Those with a balcony have a fan but some rooms have no windows though they have air conditioning. Book in advance as it’s usually full.

  • 2. Independencia, Santo Domingo

    An inexpensive hotel with a convenient location near the Parque Independencia. The rooms are clean, with soap and towels provided. Some rooms have no windows. The downside is the noisy bar, open apparently all night. Art exhibitions are sometimes held here and there is a language school across the street.

  • 3. Duque de Wellington, Santo Domingo

    This hotel lies in the pleasant residential area of Gazcue, just west of the Colonial Zone. It offers budget rooms, each with a fridge and TV. There is also a bar and a restaurant.

  • 4. Mi Casa, Constanza

    In a central location, walking distance from transport, shops, and restaurants. There’s also a comedor in the hotel that serves local food.

  • 5. Brisas del Yaque, Jarabacoa

    This place is excellent value for money. The rooms are small but the furnishings are in good condition. Rooms have a small balcony, a TV, and air conditioning. There is no restaurant but the hotel is within walking distance of all the bars, cafés, and restaurants.

  • 6. Colonial, Santo Domingo

    The rooms are small but well equipped with air conditioning, good bathrooms with hot water, a fridge, and a TV. The staff is friendly.

  • 7. Wilson’s Beach House, Cabarete

    Popular with windsurfers, who can bring and store their gear here. Upstairs, there are four rooms with bathrooms which share a sitting room, fridge, and a large balcony. Downstairs, there is a three-bedroom apartment. Electricity and hot water are solar powered.

  • 8. Docia, Samaná

    This guesthouse overlooks La Churcha with views of the bay and the dock below. The rooms are simple with private bathrooms and hot water. Each room has a fan. Those upstairs are brighter with large windows to catch the breeze.

  • 9. Fata Morgana, Samaná

    Off the beaten track, this is a quiet, peaceful place popular with backpackers and budget travelers. The rooms sleep up to four people and have bathrooms. You may use the kitchen and barbecue.

  • 10. Hotel Bayahibe, Bayahibe

    The hotel lies within walking distance of dive shops and places to eat as well as the beach. Most rooms can sleep four and are equipped with one or two beds, a TV, fridge, kitchenette, air conditioning or fan, and a balcony. There is Internet access in the lobby.
