  • 1. Amber

The golden resin makes beautiful jewelry, but before buying make sure that the piece is authentic.

  • 2. Larimar

This cool blue mineral is mined in the country and is sold uncut or as jewelry.

  • 3. Cigars

Some aficionados rate hand-rolled Dominican cigars even higher than Cuban and they are certainly better value.

  • 4. Rum

White, golden, or añejo (dark and aged), each has its appeal and is much cheaper than at home.

  • 5. Wood Carvings

Bowls and plates made from the hardwood guayacán tree are attractively solid and extremely colorful.

  • 6. Taino Artifacts

Not the original ones, of course, but well-crafted replicas can be found on sale in museums and gift shops.

  • 7. Carnival Masks

The best known are the multicolored papier-mâché devil masks from La Vega, available in Santo Domingo.

  • 8. Haitian Art

Though much of it is mass-produced kitsch, you are likely to fall for a resplendent country scene.

  • 9. CDs

The choice of merengue and bachata albums is bewildering. Ask the shop assistant to play a few.

  • 10. Coffee

Some of the best mountain-grown aromatic beans in the Caribbean are sold in vacuum-sealed tins at fairly reasonable prices.
