  • 1. Club 60, Santo Domingo

Attracting the older crowd with classic rock, merengue, and ballads, this club is only open on weekends. On Friday and Saturday you can hear merengue, and on Sundays there’s Cuban son for a different Latin beat.

  • 2. Guácara Taína, Santo Domingo

Set in a natural cave, this place is decorated with stalactites and Taíno pictographs. There are native dance shows (the club has two dance floors), and fashion shows are also held here.

  • 3. Jet Set, Santo Domingo

A casual place where Dominicans come for good Latin dance music. Things don’t get going until after midnight and continue till dawn. Look out for live merengue bands on Mondays.

  • 4. Salón La Fiesta, Santo Domingo

One of the top international hotels along the Malecón, offering a variety of nightlife, starting with a piano bar for evening cocktails. The disco usually plays Dominican music. When you’re tired of dancing, move on to the casino for a spot of gambling.

  • 5. Alcázar, Santiago

This Spanish restaurant and bar offers meals or tapas, and there is a casino for adult amusement. The real action begins at around 1am when Dominicans, dressed smartly but provocatively, arrive for a good time.

  • 6. Las Brisas, Cabarete

At the east end of the town, on the beach, this lively nightspot offers a reasonably priced Tex Mex buffet. Las Brisas is the only place in Cabarete that plays Dominican music at night – merengue and bachata.

  • 7. D’Classico, Sosúa

A large, fun disco where they play a mixture of merengue, bachata, Latin music, rock, and pop. At weekends it’s mainly Dominican music, which attracts local youth keen to befriend foreigners and teach them how to dance.

  • 8. Crazy Moon, Puerto Plata

A bar and disco where DJs entertain with merengue, salsa, and international music. Although most customers are tourists, there are lots of Dominicans around to teach them the dance routines.

  • 9. Arena, Santo Domingo

One of the capital’s best gay clubs. Wednesday is the Foam Party, Saturday the Message Party, and on Sunday there’s a drag and stripper show. DJs play house and dance music until dawn.

  • 10. Loft Lounge & Dance Club, Santo Domingo

A spirited venue, which has attracted some leading merengue bands, including Fernando Villalona and Los Hermanos Rosario, to perform live. Enjoy salsa and international pop music, with DJs spinning disks until everyone crawls off to bed.
