  • On the edge of St Stephen’s Green, this member of the Clarion hotel chain has been smartly decorated. Not as unusual as some of Dublin’s top hotels, but makes for a comfortable and central stay.

  • This recently refurbished and comfortable modern hotel is conveniently situated just around the corner from St Stephen’s Green.

  • Set in 60 acres of parkland, Coolclogher House is within walking distance of Killarney National Park. The large guestrooms have lovely views. The Victorian conservatory is built around a huge specimen camellia over 170 years old.

  • Set on a 500-acre estate of farm and woodland, this Georgian mansion lets you forget the world outside. Elegance is a virtue here, with candlelit dinners served with the family silver. Along with the open log fires there are modern comforts, and peacocks wander through the garden.

  • The lodge’s unconventional design makes the most of the view overlooking Lough Arrow and the Bricklieve Mountains. A patio catches the sun and rooms all have great views, with a semi-traditional decor. There is a piano bar for the use of residents.

  • This country mansion, dated 1842, is situated right beside Lough Corrib in private woodland. Absorb the splendid isolation by walking in the woods, or taking out one of the fishing boats. The house has a tennis court, and golf and riding are locally available.

  • This friendly family-run hotel is in a quiet rural setting five minutes’ drive from Killarney town. Families are particularly well catered for. Traditional Irish music is played nightly in the summer.

  • Excellent value for money right in the heart of the city. Pale floors, bright red sofas and a welcoming fire make up the lounge area, and the bedrooms are stylishly decorated too. The small garden at the back of the hotel is a wonderful and relaxing bonus in good weather.

  • One of Ireland’s most famous fishing lodges. The atmosphere is elegant but informal, with a library, a billiards room and a large drawing room overlooking the lake. Five restored cottages provide further accommodation. The surroundings are home to abundant wild-life, including falcons, badgers and otters. Fly-fishing offered for salmon.

  • This cosy guesthouse in Dingle town is also one of the best loved restaurants in Ireland. Lobster, the speciality, is chosen from a tank in the bar and the menu features the catch of the day. A red exterior hints at the warmth within: stone and wood decor, and an old range in the kitchen. Self-catering apartments are also available.
