  • This imposing, 19th-century listed building is a wonderful place to stay, with eight guest-rooms and an executive suite, all lovingly decorated with Irish crafts. There’s a beautiful marble fireplace to gather around in the lounge on cold winter nights, or, in summer, enjoy a round of golf or a horse ride, both available nearby.

  • Ten minutes’ drive from Clifden, this small modern hotel on the shores of Mannin Bay is near the beach. If long walks amid Connemara’s coastal scenery don’t draw you here, the excellent restaurant should.

  • Everglades

A luxurious hotel with an ideal location next to the River Foyle and beside the 17th-century walled City of Derry; it’s also convenient for exploring County Donegal and the Sperrin Mountains. Satchmo’s restaurant is well regarded.

  • In the prestigious residential district of Ballsbridge, just 10 minutes by car from the city centre, is this luxury chain hotel with all the facilities one might expect: fitness centre and swimming pool, business facilities and 259 well-equipped rooms. A good choice if you want luxury away from the hub of the city.

  • Three Georgian houses have been converted to make this hotel, which offers comfortable accommodation and is close to most conveniences.

  • Hanora’s Cottage

The Comeragh Mountains near here offer walking trails. Work up an appetite to enjoy the Irish cuisine of the restaurant. There is also a hot tub.

  • Harrington Hall

A collection of Georgian houses were combined together in 1998 to provide 28 meticulous rooms. The Irish breakfast is an excellent start to a day of sightseeing, and there is a private car park behind the hotel, which is always a bonus in congested Dublin.

  • A beautiful modern hotel, with floor to ceiling windows looking out over the surrounding parkland. Contemporary Irish art decorates communal areas, including the lounge and restaurant.

  • The Madden family have been resident in this grand house since 1734. The dining room is sumptuous beyond words, and the six bedrooms are superb with breathtaking views.

  • The period staircase in this converted Georgian house is one of its most striking features, as well as the glistening crystal chandeliers made from Waterford glass (see Waterford Crystal Factory). The hotel is conveniently situated for all the literary sights north of the Liffey such as the Dublin Writers’ Museum, so it is an ideal place for book lovers.
