  • 1. The Porterhouse

Very popular with tourists and locals, who all come to sample the wide range of draught beers from this micro-brewery. It can become incredibly crowded so if you’re dying of thirst this may not be the quickest place to quench it.

  • 2. The Odeon

A smart bar with plenty of space to sit, and the large windows onto the street make the place light and airy. The feel is sophisticated but the atmosphere remains relaxed.

  • 3. The International Bar

Popular with writers and musicians. The evenings of live music are exceptionally good and well-attended.

  • 4. Café en Seine

Recently reopened after a complete revamp, this is a trendy place in a central location. It attracts a regular young crowd keen on people-watching, as well as the after-workers. A good alternative to the traditional Dublin pub.

  • 5. McDaids

This pub offers literary tradition and an authentic old-style Dublin drinking experience, with stained-glass windows and old wooden interior. The writer Brendan Behan used to drink here so it’s a stop-off for a popular Literary Pub Crawl.

  • 6. Davy Byrne’s

A friendly pub immortalized by James Joyce in his book Ulysses . Seafood and traditional Irish fare accompany the drink.

  • 7. Oliver St John Gogarty’s

This is both bar and restaurant, extremely popular with tourists for its central location in the middle of Temple Bar and more particularly for its traditional Irish food and music.

  • 8. Mulligans

Popular traditional old pub and a regular haunt of journalists and other print workers from nearby Fleet Street. Famous as the home of “the best Guinness in Dublin”.

  • 9. O’Neills

The exterior of this pub is authentic and old-fashioned, while inside there are several different bar areas offering a variety of experiences and clientele.

  • 10. SamSara

Chic and very laid-back looking bar with rattan chairs and natural fabrics. Plenty of space between tables too – rare in Dublin.
