  • Are these details incorrect?
  • 1. J M Chef (aka Kiu Mei)

Those of a nervous disposition may want to skip the “frog milk” and “stewed insect in pot”, but the sizzling “chicken with three cups wine” is terrific.

  • 2. Lucy’s

The chilled-out atmosphere makes it a good place to wind down, though the Western and Chinese food isn’t prize- winning, and the drinks are relatively expensive.

  • 3. Bei Yuan Jiujia

A great opportunity to try – among other Cantonese and Chaozhou specialities – sweet and sour pork (tang cu li ji) as it should be.

  • 4. Dong Jiang Hai Xian Da Jiu Lou

Occupying a full five floors, a great place to go on a seafood adventure.

  • 5. 1920

Expats and locals enjoy food with a strong German influence and evening jazz sessions.

  • 6. Qing Wa Ju

By far the best of the city’s Korean restaurants, with three floors, and a roof top from where you can look out over Dong Feng Park.

  • 7. Japan Fusion

In a city famed for its football-field sized restaurants, this is one of the largest. A huge choice of Japanese/Cantonese fusion dishes.

  • 8. Di Matteo

Guangzhou’s most reliable Italian cuisine plus a very popular Sunday brunch.

  • 9. Chuan Guo Yan Yi

Best for its all-you-can-eat international lunch buffet with good sushi and seafood.

  • 10. Xiang Cun Guan

Smart, minimalist and serving unpretentious Hunanese cuisine (consider the spicy hotpots). Have someone write the name in Chinese and take a cab, or spend all day trying to find it.
