  • KXtreme

This new happening place has pool tables, flat-screen TVs, and live bands at the weekends. Warning: the Xtreme cocktail can easily serve four.

  • Bigger but not so atmospheric as the smoky, back-street hole-in-the-wall it replaced. Nearby, the tall gold Goddess of Mercy statue smiles sadly down at groovers with incipient hangovers. Live music after 9pm.

  • You won’t see “moonwalker” Michael Jackson, but the harbour view from this popular bar is magical.

  • This place has been here forever, as has the jazz band. Foot-tapping tunes by the crustiest, most grizzled bunch of musicians this side of New Orleans.

  • Interesting mix of colonial artifacts, not to mention the antique racing car.

  • Unquestionably, this is Hong Kong’s buzziest bar of the moment. Take in the fabulous crowd, soaring ceilings and big city vibe. Also written as 1/5.

  • Cosy couches, great views, live bands. Only problem is, it closed its doors recently due to licensing problems and its reopening date remains up in the air. Check first if it’s back in business.

  • The latest evidence of Wan Chai’s renaissance. Dutch cuisine and wacky modern Dutch art on the walls.

  • Typical hotel-style pub with a mix of tourists, locals and the odd exponent of the world’s oldest profession.

  • The music ranges from indie rock to metal to reggae, much to the delight of regulars who used to haunt Chemical Suzy at the same address.
