  • 360

Rub shoulders with the swanky young set of Istanbul on 360’s superb terrace bar, taking your time to drink in the stunning views of both the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn, then withdraw to the spacious, well-lit interior to sample such eclectic delights as samphire and soya sprouts, Vietnamese beef tartar, polenta-crusted calamari, seafood risotto, lamb loin confit, Margarita sorbet and pistachio baklava (see 360 ).

  • By day this is a friendly café. In the evening it becomes a bistro serving Turkish and European food, with good vegetarian options.

  • Choose from among the nargile cafés in this alley. Some stay open all night and allow you to bring in food from the stalls nearby.

  • On the first-floor waterfront terrace is the upmarket Da Mario Italian restaurant (summer only), while the second and third floors serve international cuisine and become a nightclub after the dishes are cleared away.

  • Dishes with delicate Ottoman flavours are served in a classy setting, with a summer courtyard. Reservations are recommended.

  • This huge hotel restaurant serves traditional Ottoman dishes.

  • A truly traditional Turkish experience, this wonderful fish restaurant (open since 1927) is situated in an old house with antique carpets and copper pots. There’s also an outdoor terrace with lively Gypsy violinists. The food is excellent, although there is no menu – you choose from a wide range of meze and the catch of the day (see Balıkçı Sabahattin ).

  • Balıkçı Sabahattin

One of the city’s finest fish restaurants since 1927. Head here for a special night out.

  • This two-storey restaurant offers excellent fish and meze such as hamsi (anchovies) and ezme (hot pepper dip).

  • This is a popular student bar, offering a range of cheap drinks, an energetic crowd, and live rock and blues alternating with a DJ.
