Las Vegas

The Entertainment Capital of the World offers just about everything: the world’s largest hotels; the brightest stars in show business; shops and restaurants that rival any on earth. It’s true, too, that the lights are brighter in Las Vegas. Yet you don’t have to go far from the glamour and glitter to find the natural beauty of lakes and the desert as well.

  • The setting is charming, with five acres of lawns, shade trees, and flower gardens along the Virgin River. Every room offers a spectacular view.

  • This easy trail starts at Dante’s View, following a canyon into the Black Mountains. Vegetation is dominated by mormon tea, shad-scale, and spiny desert shrubs.

  • Coney Island Emporium

Try out Big Apple-themed versions of traditional games such as coin pitches and shooting galleries, with New York-style food close at hand.

  • Prime rib, chicken marsala, and stuffed trout are favorites at this Spanish-style eatery.

  • Import bazaar with handsome tableware, furniture, foodstuffs, and art objects from all corners of the world.

  • Popular with trade show attendees. Breakfasting away from the madding crowds is a real plus.

  • Cycling at Desert Shores

Cycling in Las Vegas can be pleasant – especially in the quieter, smarter residential areas of Green Valley and off Charleston Boulevard. Even better, though, are the paths at Desert Shores, in northwest Las Vegas, where you’ll enjoy abundant shade and water views.

  • Gans is a superb impersonator with a repertoire of 300 voices. It’s a good show to combine with a trip to Madame Tussaud’s (see Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum)!

  • Dante’s View, Death Valley

On the crest of the Black Mountains, this is one of the most spectacular overlooks in Death Valley. It is approximately 5,475 ft (1,668 m) above the Badwater salt flats – the lowest point in Death Valley – and is a wonderful place for watching sunrise. The name was inspired by Dante’s Inferno .

  • The film star was also owner of a hotel-casino and museum of Hollywood memorabilia.
