Las Vegas

The Entertainment Capital of the World offers just about everything: the world’s largest hotels; the brightest stars in show business; shops and restaurants that rival any on earth. It’s true, too, that the lights are brighter in Las Vegas. Yet you don’t have to go far from the glamour and glitter to find the natural beauty of lakes and the desert as well.

  • The eccentric billionaire used his inheritance to make still more money in the film and airline industries before becoming a force in gambling.

  • Because of the hotel’s location, 17 miles from Las Vegas, most of the people who gamble here are hotel guests, so it is usually quiet during the day when many of them are playing golf. Even when full, the casino never feels crowded – a great plus for people with a low tolerance for noise.

  • The 496 guest rooms offer great views and all kinds of upscale facilities to round out the charms of this golfers’ paradise.

  • The hands-down winner for surroundings, with sweeping views of the lake and mountains.

  • Most major Strip hotels will rent or loan video-game equipment to guests with children. Since by law no child under the age of 12 should be left unsupervised in a game arcade (and there is also a curfew for under-18s), many parents want to take advantage of this useful service.

  • Indoor Skydiving

Flyaway Skydiving advises potential customers that skydiving is not without risk. The experience includes training and a simulated skydive in a wind tunnel.

  • Sheer granite cliffs drop 1,000 feet (300 m) to the canyon floor to form this vertiginous gorge. Two nerve-testing suspension bridges make the crossing near Phantom Ranch.

  • Quarter-size holes in a plaza at this residential shopping center unexpectedly spurt out water at regular intervals throughout the day. Bring your youngsters dressed in their bathing suits so they can play while you relax on the café terraces.

  • Located at the Tropicana, this chapel offers wedding ceremonies in a tropical paradise. There are two options on offer – take your pick from a ceremony in the lush Polynesian Gardens Gazeba or the South Seas-style palm-thatched Chapel. The Island Wedding Chapel was voted lushest chapel in Las Vegas by Brides Magazine in 1999.

  • The casino at this sophisticated Southwestern-style resort is small. It is also relatively quiet. Best of all, when gamblers want a break, they have a choice of strolling through the lush gardens, eating at seven different restaurants, and browsing the art gallery and smart shops.
