Las Vegas

The Entertainment Capital of the World offers just about everything: the world’s largest hotels; the brightest stars in show business; shops and restaurants that rival any on earth. It’s true, too, that the lights are brighter in Las Vegas. Yet you don’t have to go far from the glamour and glitter to find the natural beauty of lakes and the desert as well.

  • Composed of two hotels, the Palms Tower Hotel and the Spa Tower Hotel, with great restaurants such as Gustave Mauler’s Spiedini Ristorante.

  • J. W. Marriott Las Vegas

A great place during daytime for people who want to gamble in a quiet, relaxing, upscale atmosphere.

  • From Main Street, Jackie Gaughan’s may look like just another casino, but if you walk on through you will find railroad tracks on the back side. The railroad station justifiably claims to be the only one in the world that is inside a casino, which was built around the existing Union Pacific Railroad depot in the 1970s. A map of the railroad’s West Coast–Eastern Utah route is illustrated with an old-fashioned iron horse and a futuristic bullet train. Note that Main Street Station is further north.

  • The place for breakfast: scrumptious french toast and eggs fixed to your liking.

  • The comedian who famously teamed up with singer Dean Martin still has a solo act in town.

  • Jet Skiing on Lake Mead

Water babies should head for Calville Bay Marina or the Lake Mead Marina to rent jet skis, water skis, and other water craft. Note that the wearing of life jackets is obligatory out on the water. (see Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, and Laughlin)

  • Very few churches and synagogues – as distinct from wedding chapels – perform “walk-in” ceremonies. Marriage requirements vary from congregation to congregation. Contact Temple Beth Shalom or Temple Adat Ari El for more information.

  • Jigsaw Puzzles of the Strip

A pastime with no cash payout, but plenty of variety in terms of styles of puzzle and images of Vegas. The most popular are puzzles that piece together the Strip by night or form cartoon renditions of sights along the Strip. And since this part of Las Vegas is ever-changing, you may one day have a collector’s item.

  • Jogging at Sunset Park

If you’re up to more than just a casual stroll down the Strip, one of the most popular joggers’ venues is Sunset Park. Paths are well maintained and the circuit includes a fitness course. And there’s plenty to look at to keep your mind off your feet: disc-golf courts, horseshoe pits, volleyball, and radio-controlled boating on the park’s lake.

  • Jubilee

Jubilee features showgirls who not only look good but also dance well. The show offers an effective mix of production numbers and specialty acts, glamorous costumes, and pretty tunes. There are terrific special effects, too, such as the sinking of the Titanic.
