Las Vegas

The Entertainment Capital of the World offers just about everything: the world’s largest hotels; the brightest stars in show business; shops and restaurants that rival any on earth. It’s true, too, that the lights are brighter in Las Vegas. Yet you don’t have to go far from the glamour and glitter to find the natural beauty of lakes and the desert as well.

  • A bit off the beaten track, this is not a fancy place but has a pool, saloon, and general store. The nearby sand dunes are a photographer’s delight.

  • All-American fare, including an all-you-can-eat buffet in the summer.

  • Although there are dozens of paths off the beaten track, such as those at Arroyo Grande Park in Green Valley, most Las Vegas visitors do their strolling along the world-famous Strip. And why not? This road, actually a 3.5-mile (6-km) section of Las Vegas Boulevard South (or Hwy 604) is one of the most fascinating highways in the world.

  • No matter their pedigrees – or lack thereof – every dog has his day when the Strut Your Mutt competition takes place. There’s the Mutt Parade and competitions to find the best dressed dog, the one with the most spots, and the one who can do the silliest tricks.

  • Studio 54

Like its Manhattan namesake, Studio 54 attracts celebrities. Some of them even make impromptu stage appearances. Most nights, DJ Frankie officiates over the four dance floors and bars; special theme nights cater for different tastes. Additional entertainment is provided by performers suspended from bungees above the crowds.

  • Even celebrities have to eat: serious star-hunters should book a table at Studio 54 nightclub or one of the city’s Gourmet Restaurants.

  • Sunset Park

Undeniably the city’s most popular park, Sunset offers basketball, tennis, and jogging (see Tennis at Sunset Park); a place to fly kites and sail boats; some of the best picnic spots in town; and a swimming pool. There’s a dog run, too.

  • Experience almost all the Las Vegas diversions in an away-from-the-Strip location: shopping at the Galleria (see The Galleria at Sunset), golf, and casino action.

  • Sunset Station

Primarily patronized by local residents, Sunset Station is located across from the Galleria at Sunset shopping mall. The casino is light and well-ventilated. It also has a Kids’ Quest (nursery) on the premises.

  • Sunset Station

Mediterranean-themed casino with wrought-iron balconies. Natural light makes it more pleasant than most.
