Las Vegas

The Entertainment Capital of the World offers just about everything: the world’s largest hotels; the brightest stars in show business; shops and restaurants that rival any on earth. It’s true, too, that the lights are brighter in Las Vegas. Yet you don’t have to go far from the glamour and glitter to find the natural beauty of lakes and the desert as well.

  • VooDoo Lounge

Smaller than the hotel’s Club Rio, the VooDoo Lounge offers live music and a dazzling view of the Strip. There’s a cover charge for guests not dining in the VooDoo Café.

  • In 1957, 15-year-old Newton started at the Fremont; he is still performing in Las Vegas today.

  • Wet ‘n’ Wild

This spectacular water playground has a special children’s area with scaled-down water slides and bouncing lily pads. The most popular feature is the “Fujifilm Blimp,” complete with squirt guns.

  • These regal white tigers, extremely rare in their native Himalayan foothills, should be on every sightseer’s itinerary. The magnificent creatures live at the home of their trainers, Siegfried and Roy, whose show has wowed audiences at the Mirage for more than 10 years. When they are not training or performing, the animals can be viewed in their specially designed all-white habitat (it makes them feel camouflaged and secure), complete with waterfalls and palm trees.

  • Wienerschnitzel

Drive-thru hotdog stand, with both the traditional pickles-with-mustard dogs and variations.

  • An innovative menu, reasonable prices, and lots of parking space make this a happy find for people who relish fresh ingredients artfully prepared. Try the house-smoked salmon on shredded potato pancake or the eggplant layered with provolone.

  • Grand Canyon wildflowers include asters, sunflowers, globemallow, and Indian paintbrush. At Zion, look out for columbine, penstemon, Indian paint-brush, and many varieties of sunflowers. Death Valley has fewer species, but Panamint daisies grow in profusion.

  • Wildrose Canyon to Wild-rose Peak, Death Valley

A 4-mile (6-km) climb through woodland to the crest of the Panamint Mountains. Superb views.

  • Las Vegas is now the premier city for title bouts.

  • Poker players compete for $1 million.
