  • Accessible via a short trail from the eastern entrance, this strange sandstone formation resembles an elephant’s head – albeit with an oversize trunk.

  • Funeral Mountains, Death Valley

A geological fault line was responsible for tilting these spectacular mountains on their sides.

  • A low-elevation, 6-mile (9.5-km) round-trip hike featuring the finest badlands scenery in the monument, and traversing an area of fully exposed rock strata that represents millions of years.

  • Air Vegas offers an all-inclusive round-trip air fare to the Grand Canyon Railway. Board a vintage train and ride to the South Rim. A narrated motor bus tour and lunch are part of the package.

  • Great White Throne, Zion National Park

The sheer face of the Great White Throne, familiar to climbers worldwide, rises a staggering 2,200 ft (670 m) from the canyon floor, making it one of the world’s tallest monoliths.

  • Hiking at Red Rock Canyon

Follow Hwy 159 (Charleston Boulevard) west for about 25 minutes to find yourself in another world. A scenic drive loops through Red Rock Canyon: venture off this to feel truly miles away from civilization.

  • Sheer granite cliffs drop 1,000 feet (300 m) to the canyon floor to form this vertiginous gorge. Two nerve-testing suspension bridges make the crossing near Phantom Ranch.

  • Jet Skiing on Lake Mead

Water babies should head for Calville Bay Marina or the Lake Mead Marina to rent jet skis, water skis, and other water craft. Note that the wearing of life jackets is obligatory out on the water. (see Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, and Laughlin)

  • Jogging at Sunset Park

If you’re up to more than just a casual stroll down the Strip, one of the most popular joggers’ venues is Sunset Park. Paths are well maintained and the circuit includes a fitness course. And there’s plenty to look at to keep your mind off your feet: disc-golf courts, horseshoe pits, volleyball, and radio-controlled boating on the park’s lake.

  • Kolob Arch is too inaccessible to permit accurate measurements of its bulk, but it is thought to be as much as 230 ft high and 310 ft wide (70 m x 95 m).
