  • Houseboats in various sizes and with excellent facilities can be rented here. All houseboaters have to bring on deck are food and clothing.

  • A Las Vegas icon since it opened in 1958. Guests can stay in the hotel’s towers or the Motor Inn, which has motel-style rooms with parking bays.

  • A bit off the beaten track, this is not a fancy place but has a pool, saloon, and general store. The nearby sand dunes are a photographer’s delight.

  • Experience almost all the Las Vegas diversions in an away-from-the-Strip location: shopping at the Galleria (see The Galleria at Sunset), golf, and casino action.

  • The Big Theme Hotels

The five largest and most extravagant hotels are Bellagio, The Venetian, Aladdin, Mandalay Bay, and Paris (see Paris Las Vegas). Smaller than these, but still extraordinary in their dedication to a theme, are Caesars Palace, New York–New York, Treasure Island, and Excalibur.

  • French Quarter-themed hotel, with green-shuttered windows and wrought-iron balconies.

  • Whether or not the Venetian really evokes accurate images of Venice is beside the point: the sum of the hotel’s parts adds up to an aesthetically pleasing whole.

  • The sidewalk outside is wooden decking, with rope railings along the waters of Buccaneer Bay. Skull-and-crossbone door handles lead to the casino, where treasure chests, old maps, and other pirate gear continue the theme. In the shopping arcade, specialty candies are sold at the Candy Reef. Pirates pose for photos at Buccaneer Bay when they’re not doing battle with HMS Britannia.

  • Island music, exotic birds, and waterfalls make this complex a tropical paradise.

  • The complex includes 40 cabins with gas log fireplaces and private porches, and 75 motel rooms, each with two queen-size beds.
