Less than an hour from the man-made extravaganzas and simulations of the Strip are natural wonders so dramatic and thrilling that humans could not begin to replicate them. Many of these wonders are geological.

The closest is Red Rock Canyon. Also nearby are Zion National Park, with its fantastic rock formations, and Death Valley – the hottest place in North America – whose floor lies 282 ft (85 m) below sea level, making it the lowest elevation in the western hemisphere. Most famous is undoubtedly Grand Canyon, whose dimensions are breathtaking. Each region has its distinct flora and fauna, with some species found nowhere else on Earth.

More on the Grand Canyon For more information on touring the region (see Commercial Tours)
  • First stop on this 10-hour tour is the ghost town of Grafton, where segments of the movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were filmed. Then it’s on to the east entrance, the most spectacular entry way into Zion National Park.

  • Aguereberry Point, Death Valley

High in the Panamint Mountains, the point offers panoramic views across most of Death Valley, taking in Furnace Creek, the snow-capped Sierra Nevada, Devil’s Golf Course, and other landmarks. The point is accessible by mountain bike, but you’ll need excellent bike-handling skills to make the climb; there is a 13-mile (21-km) loop ride for those who want to try it.

  • Hoover Dam day trips are offered, along with tours of the Grand Canyon and Red Rock Canyon.

  • A Southwest decor in muted pastels is the setting for the all-American favorite of big steaks, baked potatoes, and crisp salads.

  • The most famous petroglyph here depicts an atlatl , a notched stick used to add speed and distance to a thrown spear.

  • ATV Adventures

Open-air jeep tours through the Valley of Fire’s back country to view wildlife, plants, and formations. Lunch and hotel pickup are included.

  • Year-round guided trips in four-wheel all-terrain vehicles and jeeps. Three-hour to three-day outings are available. The company is based in St. George, Utah.

  • Black bears are occasionally seen on the higher plateaus at Zion, but both they and grizzlies have long since disappeared from the Grand Canyon area, and no bears are known to live in the mountains surrounding Death Valley.

  • The 250-room inn has its own tennis court, heated pool, sauna, billiards, video games, beauty salon, and bowling alley.

  • Best Western Zion Park Inn

The inn is located at the foot of a 1,300-ft (430-m) cliff of Navajo sandstone. The 120 rooms are individually climate-controlled and some have kitchenettes.
