  • 1. Atlatl Rock, Valley of Fire

The most famous petroglyph here depicts an atlatl , a notched stick used to add speed and distance to a thrown spear.

  • 2. Elephant Rock, Valley of Fire

Accessible via a short trail from the eastern entrance, this strange sandstone formation resembles an elephant’s head – albeit with an oversize trunk.

  • 3. Temple of Sinawava, Zion National Park

The so-called temple is, in fact, an awe-inspiring mass of red rock. The religious name echoes many others in the park.

  • 4. Great White Throne, Zion National Park

The sheer face of the Great White Throne, familiar to climbers worldwide, rises a staggering 2,200 ft (670 m) from the canyon floor, making it one of the world’s tallest monoliths.

  • 5. Kolob Arch, Zion National Park

Kolob Arch is too inaccessible to permit accurate measurements of its bulk, but it is thought to be as much as 230 ft high and 310 ft wide (70 m x 95 m).

  • 6. Marble Canyon, Grand Canyon

The confluence of the Little Colorado and Colorado Rivers has carved out the great Marble Canyon (which is also a great place for trout fishing).

  • 7. Inner Gorge, Grand Canyon

Sheer granite cliffs drop 1,000 feet (300 m) to the canyon floor to form this vertiginous gorge. Two nerve-testing suspension bridges make the crossing near Phantom Ranch.

  • 8. San Francisco Mountains, Grand Canyon

Named the “Kingdom of St. Francis” by explorer Marcos de Nizo, the range rises to an impressive 12,655 ft (3,857 m).

  • 9. Funeral Mountains, Death Valley

A geological fault line was responsible for tilting these spectacular mountains on their sides.

  • 10. Panamint Mountains, Death Valley

The Panamints are honorary park members, lying as they do just outside it. Head for Aguereberry Point for amazing views of the Funeral Mountains and the Sierra Nevada beyond.
