  • 1. Andre’s

Quintessentially French restaurant in a converted house. Coquilles St. Jacques, magret of duck, lobster sausage, and smoked goose breast are classics. Service is gracious, and Andre Rochat presides over the kitchen.

  • 2. Pamplemousse

With rough-hewn beams, baskets of fresh flowers on the tables, and nooks decorated with pottery and copper cookware, Pamplemousse (“grapefruit” in French) resembles a dining room in Provence. Dinner begins with baskets of breads, crudités, hard-cooked eggs, and olives. Entrées include veal medallions in a dijon-accented cream sauce, and roast duckling in a red wine and rum sauce.

  • 3. Picasso

The room is exquisite, with original Picassos on the walls and a carpet designed by Pablo Picasso’s son, Claude, underfoot. Spanish-born chef, Julian Serrano, creates contemporary French dishes with an Iberian accent. Among the delights are sautéed medallions of fallow deer, a warm lobster salad, sautéed foie gras, and roasted langoustines.

  • 4. Renoir

A feast for both the palate and the eyes, with lovely opening touches such as rillettes of salmon and ciabatta, which come unbidden to the table. The signature dish is braised beef short ribs with horseradish potatoes. The decor is enhanced by Renoir originals.

  • 5. Rosemary’s

An extensive menu features the likes of rosemary roasted lamb with black olive mashed potatoes and grilled wild king salmon on a granny smith apple cabbage slaw with candied walnuts. Scrumptious desserts, include lemon ice-box pie with raspberry sorbet. The paintings on the walls are by local artists and are for sale.

  • 6. Chinois

If you read through the whole menu you may never get around to eating at Chinois – the sushi section alone lists 35 choices. Sizzling whole catfish and sweet soy-glazed Atlantic salmon are prepared with a French twist.

  • 7. Renata’s

An unusual mix of Asian, French, and Italian flavors. Stars include escargot bourguignonne , steak with stir-fried vegetables, and stuffed chicken breast with spinach, sun-dried tomato, fontina cheese, and marsala sauce. Save room for the chocolate truffle cake.

  • 8. Café Nicolle

A smart black-and-white decor with lipstick-red accents plus one of the nicest terraces in the city provide the backdrop for equally fine food. French crêpes, Italian osso buco , and a Greek spinach pie are among the highlights.

  • 9. Wild Sage Café

An innovative menu, reasonable prices, and lots of parking space make this a happy find for people who relish fresh ingredients artfully prepared. Try the house-smoked salmon on shredded potato pancake or the eggplant layered with provolone.

  • 10. Bradley Ogden

Your tastebuds are in for a treat at the elegant restaurant of Bay Area chef Bradley Ogden. Ingredients are flown in daily to create innovative dishes, such as halibut with stuffed squash blossoms. Divine desserts include a banana split that knows no equal.
