  • Ginjinha is Portuguese cherry liqueur and this tiny bar serves virtually nothing else. A Ginjinha has survived for over 150 years on sheer single-mindedness.

  • A vaulted-brick ceiling gives this rustic bar and restaurant a rather grand frame. The next-door restaurant, O Bacalhoeiro , has the same owners.

  • The current heir to Lisbon’s now-legendary Alcântara-Mar club is living up to most of the high expectations placed on it. Expect serious dancing, drinking and flaunting (see Alcântara Club ).

  • Alcântara Club

In the same warehouse premises as the revered 1990s Alcântara-Mar, Alcântara Club still kicks up a dancing frenzy.

  • Artis is one of Bairro Alto’s most lived-in bars. It’s a great place for those who like low lights, the sound of jazz, late conversation and toasted chicken sandwiches.

  • For a taste of real Lisbon culture, stay late at this friendly venue.

  • The outdoor tables have a great view at sunset but stand on a slight incline; people have been known to slide off their chairs before they’ve finished their first drink. The restaurant inside is strong on starters.

  • What is arguably Lisbon’s grooviest club occupies certainly the most successful warehouse conversion along the quays. The space isn’t huge, the crowd is far from pimply, and the atmosphere is slightly glamorous yet relaxed, enhanced by mellow house and funky sounds.

  • At this DJ bar the aim is to break with minimalism by furnishing the interior with comfortable beds, patterned wallpaper and clever lighting. The music is hip-hop, electro and tracks from the 1980s and 1990s.

  • At what was once the Taverna Inglesa, haunt of Brits from local shipping firms, the selection of beers is wider than usual. The wall clock ticks anticlockwise.
