London

A city of infinite colour and variety, London is both richly historic, tracing its roots back over 2000 years, and unceasingly modern, at the forefront of fashion, music and the arts. There is a fantastic amount to interest and entertain the visitor here: a selection of the best of the best is explored here.

  • Camden Mall and Camden Passage

More than 35 dealers sell everything from furniture to books at North London’s most exciting antiques market. Open Tue–Sat.

  • Camden Market

A great place to spend a Saturday, this rambling market around Camden Lock takes in several streets and buildings. Street fashion, world crafts... it’s as if the 1960s never ended. Sundays are a crush.

  • Camden Markets

The most exciting North London markets are open every weekend, and linked by the busy and colourful Camden High Street. Camden Market, near the tube station, is packed with stalls selling clothes, shoes and jewellery. Further up the road, by the canal, Camden Lock Market focuses on crafts and ethnic goods. Stalls in the warehouses of Stables Market have great food on sale. Open weekends only between 8am and 6pm.

  • Canary Wharf

The centrepiece of the Docklands development is Canary Wharf and the 240-m (800-ft) -high, 50-storey Canada Tower designed by the US architect, Cesar Pelli. Although the tower is not open to the public, parts of the complex are open to visitors, including the mall, where there are shops, restaurants and bars. The star of area’s exciting architecture is the magnificent Canary Wharf station, designed by Norman Foster.

  • Cantaloupe

A large warehouse bar where art students meet city workers. Chips and other snacks are served at the bar and a restaurant area serves up Mediterranean food.

  • Huge, vaulted dining room serving excellent Mediterranean food.

  • American dining by the river, with hearty American portions. Good for weekend roasts and brunch.

  • Imaginatively set in three railway arches, this large space is devoted to music, drink and food until 1am. There is live music every night in the back-room club.

  • A slightly frosty reception but the food here is as good as always. Plus there's an upstairs as well so don't worry if it looks busy. Our waiter was friendly and made good wine and side dish suggestions. We'll be going again.

  • A touch of authentic Italy in this quiet square behind Oxford Street. Eat hand-made pasta at pavement tables.
