London

A city of infinite colour and variety, London is both richly historic, tracing its roots back over 2000 years, and unceasingly modern, at the forefront of fashion, music and the arts. There is a fantastic amount to interest and entertain the visitor here: a selection of the best of the best is explored here.

  • A "secret garden" in the middle of London for a quiet wander but also informative if you want to know more about the uses of plants. Not open every day so check times.

  • The climax of the cricket season.

  • Between Waterloo Station and the London Eye, this is one of a chain of French restaurants whose simple steak and fries are unbeatable.

  • Chez Gerard

This branch of a popular chain of French restaurants has a glass roof and spectacular setting overlooking Covent Garden market. Robust, unfussy French food at its best. The café is open 11am–5pm.

  • Chicago

This US hit, set in murderous Chicago, has been packing them in since it arrived in London in 1998. The dancing and music have remained excellent through various changes of international star casts.

  • Chinatown

Ornate oriental archways in Gerrard Street mark the entrance to Chinatown, an area of London that has, since the 1950s, been the focus of the capital’s Chinese residents. Here you can shop at Chinese supermarkets, gift shops and martial arts suppliers and, on Sundays, browse the street stalls selling exotic vegetables. The Chinese New Year, celebrated in late January or early February, is a particular highlight. Chinatown abounds with excellent-value restaurants.

  • Chinatown is taken over by dancing dragons breathing fire during this vibrant, colourful festival. Food and craft stalls are authentically oriental.

  • Chiswick House

This piece of Italy in London is a high spot of English 18th-century architecture. The square villa, with its dome and portico, was built for Lord Burlington, with beautifully painted interiors by William Kent. Temples, statues and a lake complete the Italianate gardens.

  • Non-stop adventure for all ages as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the magical car, his eccentric inventor and family outwit the dastardly baron and evil childcatcher. Sensational sets, special effects and songs by the Sherman brothers.

  • Visiting the salerooms here is like going to a small museum. Their experts will value items brought in by the public.
